The earliest traces of public swimming pools date back some 5,000 years to the area of present-day Pakistan. In the ancient city of Mohendjo-Daro, archaeologists discovered the so-called “Great Bath” - a rectangular basin carved in brick, which was probably a place for ritual bathing. Similar facilities were found in ancient Egypt and Greece, although there they more often took the form of stone tanks with water for washing. The real heyday of bathing culture came with the Roman Empire. The Romans built impressive thermal complexes, meaning huge public baths with hot and cold water, saunas and even libraries and massage rooms. Although their main purpose was hygiene and relaxation, it was then that the first facilities appeared that can be called the ancestors of today's swimming pools - deeper basins with clean water in which to swim. Interestingly, the Romans were also familiar with water supply and filtration systems, making their baths extremely modern for the time.

A pool full of milk

Over the centuries, swimming pools gained not only a recreational function, but also a sporting one. The first Olympic swimming competitions were held in 1896 in Athens, although at that time they took place... in the open sea. It was not until the 20th century that professional swimming pools began to be built with designated lanes and standardized lengths - 25 or 50 meters. Today, swimming pools delight with diversity. For example, in the world we can find the deepest pool in the world - Deep Dive Dubai, which is as deep as 60 meters and looks like a sunken city. In Poland, on the other hand, the record belongs to Deepspot in Mszczonów, which is 45.5 meters deep. It is an ideal place for divers to practice. On the other hand, the world's largest swimming pool in terms of surface area is located in Chile, in the resort of San Alfonso del Mar, and is more than 1 kilometer long and resembles a lagoon rather than a classic swimming pool! Non-standard pools are also built around the world, for example, in the Czech Republic there is a pool filled with beer, and in Japan with milk.
