Bamboo socks – a hit or a marketing ploy?

Bamboo and bamboo viscose – not the same thing

Bamboo is a plant with many advantages – it grows quickly, does not require pesticides, and thanks to the natural substance bamboo-kun, it has antibacterial and antifungal properties. In addition, it is biodegradable, hypoallergenic, and antistatic. Sounds perfect, right? The problem is that most clothes – including socks – advertised as “bamboo” are not made from the natural fibers of this plant, but from so-called bamboo viscose, and that's a big difference. Bamboo viscose is a product that has undergone intensive chemical processing. First, the bamboo is ground into pulp and then processed using strong chemicals such as caustic soda, carbon disulfide, and sulfuric acid. In this process, the natural structure of the fiber is destroyed and compounds such as bamboo-kun are removed. The result is a fiber that, although derived from a plant, loses its natural properties. Although bamboo viscose does not retain the wonderful properties of bamboo itself, this does not mean that such socks are worthless. They are usually soft and pleasant to the touch, breathable, and a much better choice than polyester or acrylic socks. If you care about greater durability, natural antibacterial properties, and good thermoregulation, merino wool is the better choice. It is more expensive, but extremely functional and durable.

What about the environmental aspect?

Many companies promote bamboo socks as eco-friendly, but traditional bamboo viscose production is far from environmentally friendly. The chemicals used are toxic, both to nature and to the people working in production. In addition, open processes are often used, which means that some of the harmful substances escape into the atmosphere or water. However, there is an alternative – a more eco-friendly material called lyocell. It is produced in a closed loop using a non-toxic NMMO solvent, which is fully recovered and reused multiple times. If a manufacturer uses lyocell, they usually boast about it on the label. Bamboo viscose socks are not evil incarnate – they are soft and comfortable, and sometimes better than synthetics. However, it is worth being aware of the difference between natural bamboo and viscose, and not being misled by eco-slogans. If you are looking for a truly eco-friendly, durable, and functional choice, consider merino wool or lyocell. Conscious shopping starts with knowledge – now you are one step closer.
