The birds inhabit areas of America (from southern Mexico to Argentina and Paraguay), Africa and Asia (from Tibet to Indonesia). Toucans live primarily in forests. They are aided in surviving the heat by their massive beak. Although it gives the impression of being very heavy, it actually does not weigh much, as it is made of bone beams that form an openwork structure. Inside the beak is a dense network of blood vessels, making the whole thing capable of thermoregulation.
Life of the toucan
Toucans inhabit hollows, although they do not build them themselves. They move into places abandoned by other birds. Some toucan species even adapt holes in the ground or termite mounds for their homes. Toucans live in pairs or small groups. The female lays an average of 2 to 4 eggs, and takes care of the offspring with her partner. The birds' courtship involves throwing fruit. In this way, the female decides which suitor she will choose. It is fruit that is the main source of food for toucans, although they are omnivorous birds whose menu can also include seeds, insects and even small reptiles. The inner side of the beak with its structure resembles a notched knife, so the birds can easily cope with opening seeds or nuts. It is no coincidence that toucans are most often observed sitting in trees. The birds like to stay on their favorite branches for long periods of time, from which they can reach food. In addition, toucans are not good fliers. To cover even a short distance requires them to exert a lot of effort and flap their wings vigorously, which sometimes makes them appear as if they are hopping in the air rather than flying.
