Collecting eggs
Where did the tradition of giving gifts by the hare actually come from? Historians agree that the origins of the custom are very difficult to determine, as it developed in parallel in different corners of Europe. One of the most popular theories is that hares were chosen as Easter animals because of the symbolism associated with spring. For centuries, hares have been considered one of the symbols of nature awakening to life. This is due, among other things, to the high fertility of the animals. Most likely, the custom originated in pre-Christian Europe, and the regions of Germany are most often indicated as the country of its birth. However, this is only the beginning of the traditions associated with the celebration of Easter. Of course, everyone is well acquainted with walking around with a holy mass, painting Easter eggs or dousing oneself with water in śmigus-dyngus, but there are also more unusual traditions characteristic especially of small regions. In Kashubia, the basket game is well-known. Children collect field flowers in their baskets, and the winner is the one who manages to create the most beautiful composition. In some corners of Lower Silesia, a custom called baba among the hens is still cultivated. The rules are very simple - on the day before Easter, men dress up as women, then collect eggs in a chicken coop and distribute them to family and friends. The tradition was once believed to ensure a household's fertility.
