During the evenings with scary stories, urban legends and stories about monsters are most often quoted. Among the latter, legends and myths about shape-shifting creatures transforming into bats or wolves prevail, but did you know that in Asia stories about tigress are more popular? This term is used to describe women who transform into wild cats. Depending on the region, there are various versions of tigress myths. One variant claims that these creatures took revenge on men for how badly women are treated in their culture. At the time, tigresses were usually beautiful sorceresses who seduced men, and when they achieved their goal, they stripped their victims of their appendages and then threw them to other tigresses. According to another version of the legend, the tiger gene was hereditary, and the women who were burdened with it tried to keep their secret at all costs, so they went hunting at night and at dawn assumed human form.
Seal maidens
However, in legends and tales, shape-shifting creatures do not always have evil intentions towards humans. Among the Scots and Irish, there is a well-known story about creatures called selkie. According to Celtic legends, selkies take the form of seals, but they can turn into women. When they do, they leave their seal skin on the shore and move on to fishing villages. Selkies have no ill intentions, and their wanderings sometimes stem from simple curiosity, and other times from a desire to change their lives. It is said that it happens that selkie fall in love with fishermen and then decide to lead a human life. They are extremely desirable wives not only for their extraordinary beauty, but also for their thriftiness. Legend has it that selkie have a great love of order and, seeing disorder in the hut, are unable to leave it without their interference. If a selkie decides for herself that she wants to stay on land, she can lead a peaceful and happy life. However, there have been situations in which men have hidden seal skins to prevent the selkie from returning to the sea. Then such a creature, even after long years, will find a way to return home, as it will not be able to bear the longing.
