Ever wondered why it is the hare that brings Easter gifts? It's one of those customs that is considered the norm when you're a child, but is often forgotten in adulthood. Researchers trace the origins of this tradition to both mythology and the early Christian period. In the former, hares were, among other things, a symbol of fertility. In ancient Greece they appeared next to the goddess of beauty, Aphrodite, while in ancient Egypt they were the embodiment of the most important of the gods, Osiris. In the Christian faith, the hare symbolized people who converted to faith in Christ. However, there is no doubt that the custom itself, of giving gifts to children, had its origins in Germany. Since the 17th century, the tradition of combining hares with Easter eggs became popular. It was these friendly creatures that were supposed to bring decorated eggs to the little ones. The idea itself was most likely taken from the custom of giving tribute in kind. But why exactly did the hare become the deliverer of gifts? This was influenced, among other things, by the period in which Easter fell. It is at the end of March and the beginning of April that hares are most often spotted by people, as this is the time of the animal's mating season. The tradition of the so-called "hare" came to Poland at the turn of the 20th century. At first it became popular especially in Silesia, Western Pomerania and Greater Poland. Today the custom is known in many regions of Poland. Modern hares sometimes still give Easter eggs to children, but mostly the eggs are in addition to sweets and small gifts.
