Butterfly lovers
The Chinese legend is set during the Jin Dynasty, many centuries before Shakespeare could even think of writing his own work. The story is usually referred to as Butterfly Lovers. There once lived a wealthy family in southern China. The youngest descendant and only girl was Zhu Yingtai. From an early age, the girl stood out for her courage and thirst for knowledge. Unfortunately, in those days, there were strict rules about what the genders were allowed to do. So Zhu spent her days learning manners and knitting. She was genuinely envious of her brothers, who went off to school one by one. The girl dreamed of studying old books, but her parents were indifferent to her pleas. After all, no one even thought about the woman being admitted to the academy. So Zhu decided to act on her own. She changed into men's clothes and surreptitiously ran away to school. On her way there, she met Liang Shanbo, who became her best friend. They spent time studying and even shared a room together. Zhu quickly developed feelings for her friend, but she couldn't tell him her secret. Three years of college passed when the girl's parents decided to end her adventure. It was time for matchmaking. Before Zhu was forced to return, she managed to ask her friend to visit her at home. He was surprised to discover that his companion was a woman. They soon realized that they wanted to share their lives together. Unfortunately, Liang was poor and was rejected by Zhu's parents, who had already chosen another husband for her. Filled with grief, Liang's heart broke. On the day of Zhu's wedding, the waves pushed the boat onto a meadow. Liang's grave was located there. The girl started to cry and begged the gods to make the stones unravel and show her the way to her beloved. And so they did. The girl disappeared into the grave and her body was never found. Similarly, there was no trace of Liang there. Instead, the wedding guests saw two butterflies emerge from the ground and fly together towards the flowery hills.
