Traditional holly

One of the indispensable parts of Easter is the traditional carnival. On Easter Saturday, Catholics go to churches to consecrate food. Wicker baskets are usually decorated with a white doily, boxwood branches and flowers. But what is in the basket itself? This depends, among other things, on the region of Poland and the traditions associated with it, but some products are repeated in almost all areas. A lamb, symbolizing the victory of life over death, is indispensable. The holy sacrament cannot also lack eggs. Some people decide to decorate them additionally, creating one-of-a-kind Easter eggs or sprinkles. No matter how they look like, eggs always symbolize the rebirth of life. In the basket, there is also often room for cold meat, sausage and cake. Food is associated with health and abundance. Additionally, baked goods symbolize perfection. Salt is placed in the basket as a sign of purification, while horseradish is a sign of vitality. Most often, wicker items are decorated with boxwood leaves, which are associated with joy. In Poland the tradition of blessing food has been known for centuries, but there are also areas where the custom became popular only in the twentieth century. It arrived relatively late in Kashubia and Silesia. In many Polish homes, in addition to the feast, is also known the tradition of sharing eggs at Easter breakfast. This custom is similar to breaking the wafer on Christmas Eve, during which we wish our loved ones.
