Legend of Zielenica

Seaside countries have an unusually large number of legends related to sea creatures. This also applies to Poland. Some stories are known by the majority of the country's population, while others are popular only in particular regions. To the latter category we can include the West Pomeranian legend of Zielenica. In distant times a poor fisherman lived in the village of Trzęsacz. Every day he went out with his boat to catch fish, but his nets were never completely full. Everything changed one spring day when the fisherman saw a beautiful creature among the waves. It was a mermaid, her lush blond hair streaked with green. Shoals of fish swam around her and she enticed them with her beautiful voice. From then on, the fisherman met the mermaid every day and soon his nets were full of fish. The two sea companions became friends, but this was not enough for the man. He proposed marriage to the mermaid, but she told him that sea creatures could not have relations with humans and that her father, King Baltic, would never accept it. However, blinded by love, the fisherman did not care about the refusal and caught the mermaid in his net. Green was unhappy on land. She missed her sisters, her father, and her former life. She soon died and was buried in the local cemetery. From then on, the fishing nets became empty and all the fish drifted away from around the village. Not many days passed when the fisherman was laid to rest in the cemetery by his chosen one. When King Baltic learned of all this, he burst into a monstrous rage. He decided that he would not rest until his daughter's remains were returned to the sea. Every year since then, the waves have taken a piece of land.
