Such gingerbread, however, was quite hard and sometimes it was necessary to moisten it with sauces or drinks. A soft variant of the dough was also baked, which was especially for women and children. All recipes were closely guarded, and as a result this state of affairs persisted until the 19th century. Legends are known that elaborately decorated gingerbread was given as gifts on the occasion of marriage and even coronations. Gingerbread makers were among the most highly regarded craftsmen, and although the process of learning them was one of extremely long and arduous, in later years they could count on decent profits and general respect.
