Over the centuries there have also been many different divisions of the types of love. The author of one of them is Erich Fromm. The German philosopher and psychoanalyst compared love to art, and since every artist achieves perfection only with great effort, this means that love also takes time. It can only be learned by being patient and persistent. According to Fromm's theory, love is a fundamental value that gives human life meaning. However, experiencing it requires accepting that no human being is perfect and cannot be changed by force. The psychoanalyst divided love into the following types: self-love, parental love, friendship, erotic love, and love to God.
What are the types of love?
The division of the German psychoanalyst is not the first or last attempt to categorize feelings. Centuries ago, the ancient Greeks also made a division into types of love. In their view, the feeling is divided into agape, eros, storge and philia. Agape is sometimes called the purest kind of love. In it, a person is completely selfless, and the highest value for him is the good of others. In Christianity, agape is the kind of love that God gives to man. The ancient Greeks also distinguished eros, which is the feeling most associated with the carnal sphere. Eros is associated with desire for another person, but also for material goods or honor. This is a type of love that needs special attention. Storge, on the other hand, is family love. It arises in a person unconditionally and is most often associated with his background and sense of belonging. Types of love are closed by philia, which is based on attachment to another person and feeling an unusual bond with him. It is a love devoid of passion, which is why it can unite, for example, friends or family members.
