Symbolism of Easter eggs

Easter eggs are decorated eggs. Most often they come from hens, but there are also goose, duck and ostrich eggs. In Germanic mythology, eggs were even laid by a hare. The custom of decorating Easter eggs was common during the Roman Empire. Most probably the tradition became popular in Poland around the 10th century. One of the decorative techniques was particularly popular at that time. Patterns were created on eggs using melted wax. Next, the whole thing was dipped in dye, which was usually ochre or onion skins. These ingredients gave the egg a dark red color. Nowadays, Easter eggs come in a wide variety of colors and patterns. There are so many different techniques of decorating Easter eggs that they are named after them. The most popular are kraszanki, which gain their unique color by boiling in a specially prepared broth. Today, ready-made dyes are often used, but traditionally only plants were used. Blue is provided by cornflowers, pink can be obtained using beet juice, while periwinkle leaves and young rye shoots are responsible for the green color. Scratch eggs are another type of egg, which are created by scratching patterns into the colored layer of the egg with a tool. Oklejanki, on the other hand, are decorated with various ornaments. These may be fragments of cut-outs, but also threads or flower petals. Openings are created on the basis of egg shells, in which holes are then drilled. Easter eggs are commonly referred to as all decorated eggs, but in fact this name is characteristic for one technique. It is the application of patterns using warm wax, which was popular centuries ago, and then covering the whole thing with dyes that transforms eggs into Easter eggs.
