Why do we celebrate Fat Thursday?

Have you ever heard about Fat Thursday? The origin of this day comes from one of the legends of Lesser Poland. According to the legend, once ruled Krakow mayor with a heart steeped in darkness. The man, named Comber, used every opportunity to oppress the inhabitants. The sadness and fear of others filled him with satisfaction. Everyone was an enemy to him, but as a special target he chose the women traders standing in the market square of Krakow. He took pleasure in making the women miserable until one Thursday, when his own life came to an end. The townspeople breathed a sigh of relief and began to call the day on which their tormentor had departed "Comrow Thursday". Since then it has been a time filled with joy and... delicious baked goods. Originally in Poland donuts were made in a dry version. They were a kind of appetizer which was served before meat dishes. Donuts themselves could also be filled with meat stuffing e.g. made of pork fat and additionally covered with pork scratchings. This version of donuts accompanied folk celebrations organized to mark the symbolic end of winter and arrival of spring. The 16th century brought the appearance of the sweet version of baked goods. Since then, the delicacies have appeared in many different forms. The most common variant is rose jam, however, one can also find donuts filled with caramel, halva or chocolate, among others.
