Many maidens and bachelors were forced to enter into relationships under the pressure of relatives or elders. One of the most popular traditions was the floating of garlands. Each maiden would weave her own composition and then throw it into the swirl of water. The bachelor's task was to fish out the garland and then find its owner. It was believed that such a couple was brought together by destiny. In addition, maidens decorated their garlands with bows or other decorations. Girls who were not yet in love believed that the garland would help them point out the future object of affection.
