Mitzvah-dyngus

Depending on the region, Midsummer Eve has many different names. It is also known as Lazy Monday, Oblewanka or St. Leik's Day. Customs associated with Easter Monday have been very popular for centuries, especially in Polish villages. One of the most popular traditions was smearing maidens with willow twigs. Maidens did not have an easy life, because other suitors eagerly doused them with water. Nowadays we could call it a horse courting, but in the past it was a proof that the maiden is interesting for the bachelors. The lack of dousing could even end with crying, which in no way compensated for the disappointment. In Poland there are still some traditions characteristic for particular regions. One of them is Siude Baba. It is a custom that originated in the Cracow area. Legend has it that on Kopcowa Mountain there was a temple, in which an eternal fire was burning. It was watched over by a virgin priestess, who could not leave her post for a year, even to wash. After her service, the woman would move to the vicinity of Lednica Górna to find her successor. However, the priestess's characteristic appearance frightened away the girls, who hid to avoid a similar fate. The woman was burned by fire, and her body was covered with rags. However, when the priestess came to someone's doorstep, she could not be refused donations or food. Otherwise, the inhabitants could face starvation. The legend derives from Slavic customs connected with chasing away winter. Nowadays, on Easter Monday in the vicinity of Bochnia and Wieliczka you can meet men dressed up as the legendary priestess. These are the so-called Siude Baba. If the masquerader gets soot on your face, it means that you will be lucky very soon.
