Why do we decorate Christmas trees?

Socks into baubles

Dressing the tree together is a time that unifies the family tremendously. The sounds of carols or Christmas songs come from the speakers, and all the household gathers together to feel the atmosphere of the approaching Christmas. A warm sweater and socks with baubles are mandatory styling items. The only rule is to be nice and comfortable. Socks in gingerbread people will help to feel this unusual atmosphere even better. In the Polish tradition, decorating the Christmas tree took place on Christmas Eve morning, but influenced by English and American customs, many families decided to speed up the process. Some decorate their trees as early as the beginning of December. This solution is chosen for a couple of reasons. First of all, there is often a real chaos in the house on Christmas Eve. In the midst of preparing dishes and wrapping gifts, it is difficult to find time to hang baubles quietly and be able to fully savor the moment. In addition, quite a few people say that decorating the tree in advance allows you to enjoy the atmosphere of the upcoming Christmas even longer. Nowadays, ready-made baubles in particular are popular, but a few decades or even a dozen years ago, handmade decorations dominated the trees. Back then, the whole family sat around the table and created small works of art. Many of us still remember the chains that were created from paper or tissue paper. Those with an artistic flair created peacock eyes and hedgehogs. Colored paper, tissue paper and glue were enough to create real masterpieces. On the other hand, for those who didn't like manual work, there was still, for example, wrapping nuts in silverware or hanging ornaments on the Christmas tree. This is one of the most beautiful Christmas traditions, which is worth continuing even today.

Symbolism of baubles

It is customary to divide Christmas tree ornaments into edible and decorative ones. What is hung on the Christmas tree often has a rich symbolism. Tidbits were usually meant to ensure prosperity. Walnuts were wrapped in silverware or decorative tissue paper and then hung on the tree with the help of a wire. Gingerbread and shortbread cookies were first decorated, and the creations thus created had a special place on the Christmas tree. Sweets were associated with joy, as well as with feelings of love. With the help of baked goods, there was always supposed to be a friendly atmosphere in the house. Among the edible items, apples, or fruits of paradise, were also popular. Most often, small apples of paradise were chosen, symbolizing health and beauty. However, on the Christmas tree had its place not only treats, but also typically decorative elements. The top of the Christmas tree was reserved for the star, which symbolized the Star of Bethlehem, leading the Three Wise Men from the East. The lighting of the tree also played an important role. The lights symbolized the coming of Christ, which gave hope for a better tomorrow. On the other hand, in folk beliefs, the lights were believed to protect all household members from evil charms. What else could not be missing on the Christmas tree? Of course, a chain, preferably self-made. This is a unique decoration, which had a double symbolism. On the one hand, chains were believed to help maintain family ties. On the other hand, however, they were associated with enslavement. Depending on the historical period, this enslavement was either political or spiritual, where it meant being under the bondage of sin. Angels were also popularly hung on Christmas trees, which were considered guardians of the home. Bells, on the other hand, signified the arrival of good news.
