History of glitter

Probably all of us have had contact with glitter at some point, but what exactly is it? In the 19th century, the shiny particles were created from ground or powdered glass. The resulting product then had the same color as the processed material. The resulting decoration was referred to as diamantine. The dabs shone beautifully, but creating them from glass was controversial, so in the 20th century the production method was changed. Since then, they began to use a copolymer, additionally enriched with a luminous material such as aluminum foil. Thus prepared material goes under special blades, with the help of which glitter is created. The size, color and shape of the ornaments is dictated by their application, for example, very fine glitter is used in hairdressing, while many toys are decorated with much larger and differently shaped particles. Henry Ruschmann is responsible for the creation of the modern version of glitter. As is often the case in the world of inventions, the creation of glitter happened by accident. An American mechanic very carefully ground scrap metal with plastic, and it was through this process that glitter was created. These events took place in 1934. Today, the company Ruschmann left behind produces nearly 20,000 types of glitter. There is no doubt that it is a real paradise for glitter lovers. Nowadays we associate glitter primarily with toys, stationery and cosmetics, but the product's unique properties have also benefited anglers and soldiers, among others. It has been proven that many fish are tempted by glittering bait. In the military, in turn, the properties of glitter were used, among others, in the ranks of the US Air Force. During flight, a considerable amount of glitter was released, from which a special cloud was formed. Thanks to it, there were specific echoes that confused enemy radars, and as a result, the devices were not able to determine whether it was an actual aircraft or the result of a fort.
