This is a question to which every pet guardian has an immediate answer. They are faithful, give unconditional love, and sometimes it is because of them that life gains meaning. Many dogs are not only great friends, but also skilled professionals. Some search for missing persons, others are true masters in detecting forbidden substances. There are also those whose vocation is therapy. Scientists have not yet discovered all the abilities of dogs, what is certain is that it is difficult to imagine life without them.

Guardians of two worlds

Dogs have already aroused fascination among our distant ancestors. Animals occupied an important place in the culture of Ancient Egypt, among others. There, dogs were treated like members of the family. It was the Egyptians who were the first to introduce laws that protected dogs. Some historians even note that four-legged dogs were better off there than many slaves. How important a role dogs played is evident, among other things, in the images of the gods, who took on half-human and half-animal forms. Mention must be made first of all of Anubis, one of the most important Egyptian deities. Anubis is depicted as a god with the head of a jackal. Some also see in his image a resemblance to a greyhound. Anubis is a god associated with mummification, death and the process of the soul's passage to another world. This is linked to the jackal itself, considered a graveyard animal. The black color, which is often associated with Anubis, refers to the symbolism associated with Egypt. The dark color is combined with the black soil characteristic of the Nile Valley. The soil is a sign of rebirth. Anubis was believed to witness the embalming of bodies. Accordingly, it was common for priests to wear a jackal mask to resemble the deity and emphasize his presence. The figure of the dog was associated with the connection between the world of the living and the dead in Ancient Greece as well. It was the three-headed Cerberus that guarded the gateway connecting the two realms. Similar beliefs also existed in Slavic circles, where it happened that dogs were credited with the ability to see the dead.
