The name of the stone comes from the Greek word amethystos, which can be translated as: sober. The ancient Greeks believed that wine, consumed from purple goblets, does not go to the head and does not shroud the mind in a fog of forgetfulness. Also in Greek mythology there was a story about the creation of amethyst. According to the myth, there once lived a beautiful forest nymph named Amethis, for whom Dionysus was enamored. The nymph, having no strength left to escape, called Artemis for help. Artemis turned the nymph into a white stone, the color of which symbolized purity and innocence of the maiden. In despair over his loss, Dionysus inadvertently spilled wine on the stone, which turned it purple. Many people believe that amethyst helps in knowing a person's path in life. A less popular, but equally stunning, stone is lavender, also called lavender moon or lavender rose. It is actually lavender quartz, which has a lilac pink hue. It is sometimes referred to as the stone of love, and some believe that it is a stone conducive to the development of romantic feelings.
