If you think of wool as a rough and gritty material, you will certainly change your mind when you come into contact with merino wool. Classic fibres are thick and hard, which can be uncomfortable to the touch. Thin, delicate merino fibers, on the other hand, have much better elasticity, making them soft and pleasant to the skin. Probably most of us have seen an image of a merino at some point. Admittedly, these large sheep are found especially in Australia and New Zealand, but they are distinctive enough that their image is also familiar to many Europeans. Merino fleece has extraordinary properties. These unique sheep originated in Asia, but have made their home in the mountainous areas of Australia and New Zealand. Life in the foothills of the Southern Alps is not an easy existence. In summer, temperatures can reach 40°C, while in winter they drop to -30°C. Only extremely hardy species, including the Merino, can survive these extreme conditions. Sheep are able to exist at such extreme temperatures thanks to their fleece. Merino wool is very dense, but it consists of thin and delicate fibers, between which air accumulates, which, depending on the weather, does not allow the body to overheat or freeze. It is this unusual material that has become the basis for making clothing. Merino wool is used to make sweaters, scarves, hats and also socks.
